THE STATUS OF RED BOLLWORM DIPAROPSIS CASTANEA (HMP), A QUARANTINE INSECT PEST IN TANZANIA

Demonstrations to verify existence of the red bollworm in Southern and South-west Tanzania were conducted during the 2004/2005 season. Farmers from 6 villages participated. They were asked to plant cotton in their fields. Management practices were followed as per the Tanzania’s Eastern Cotton Growing area recommendations. At Crop physiological maturity, the plots were visited and observed for red bollworm infestation. The results revealed heavy infestation of red bollworm in all villages except those which are outside the quarantine zone. As a follow up, further studies to establish the extent of crop loss due to the pest, its spread and host range were recommended.
