Advances in Nematode Management in Cotton

Nematodes reduce cotton yields more than all other diseases combined. Current research is elucidating the relationships among soils, cotton yields, nematode damage potential, and demonstrating more efficient ways to target nematicide application. Long-needed developments in host plant resistance are on the horizon. Release of improved germplasm with both root-knot and reniform nematode resistance, each combined with genetic makers, has made near-term (5 year), commercialization of nematode-resistant cotton possible. Such improvements suggest that the recent increases in damage to cotton from nematodes can be reversed.
